Guevarra says circumspection should be exercised in dealing with Ateneo bullying incident

Adds issue should be addressed “internally,” within school policy parameters

(Eagle News) — For Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, “circumspection” should be exercised in dealing with the bullying incident in Ateneo Junior High School.

According to Guevarra, an Atenean, “we are dealing with growing up and adolescent children lacking in maturity and discernment here.”

“..Sensitive care and understanding should be extended to those young children who commit and/or are at the receiving end of these acts,” he said.

Because of this, he said he would advise that the situation be addressed “internally, within the parameters of school policy and regulations.”

He said the parents and the school administration “have the principal responsibility to address this concern.”

“These things happen everywhere, in private and public schools, in exclusive and non-exclusive schools..,” he said.

Ateneo has said it was investigating the incident, which involves a junior high school student physically and verbally assaulting another student in the school bathroom.

The incident was caught on video that has now gone viral.

Other videos featuring the same boy hurling physical and verbal attacks on other students eventually surfaced online.

The Palace said it was “bothered” by the incident, and called on Ateneo to “do something about it.”
