Guevarra says Canada trash to be shipped back tomorrow, May 30

Canadian gov’t to shoulder shipment cost, Guevarra adds

(Eagle News)–Canada’s trash will finally be shipped back to the North American country tomorrow, Thursday, May 30.

This is according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, who was designated caretaker of the government  with  President Rodrigo Duterte  on official visit to Japan.

According to Guevarra, the container vans with the trash, which were shipped to the Philippines six years ago, will be loaded on vessels owned by three shipping companies, Maersk, Zim and CMA-CGM.

He said the cost of reshipment from Manila to Vancouver, estimated at P10 million, will be shouldered by the Canadian government.

The  development comes a week after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered government agencies to look for private vessels that would ship the trash back to Canada.

This was after the North American country missed the May 15 deadline given by the Philippine government for the shipment.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo  said then that the Philippine government would instead shoulder the cost of the shipment.

If  Canada refused to accept the garbage, Panelo said the  private shipping company was told to leave the trash  “within the territorial waters or 12 nautical miles out to sea from the baseline of any of their country’s shores.”
