Guevarra: Revocation of amnesty granted to Trillanes has nothing to do with his opposition to gov’t

(Eagle News)—Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday, Sept. 4, denied the revocation of the amnesty granted to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV had anything to do with his opposition to the administration.

In a press briefing, Guevarra said “it’s a matter of compliance with the law.”

“This is a matter which is provided in the Constitution itself. When the chief executive grants clemency, all the requirements must be naturally complied with,” Guevarra said.

In revoking the amnesty granted by former President Benigno Aquino III to Trillanes via  Proclamation 572, President Rodrigo Duterte said Trillanes did not apply for the amnesty in the first place and did not show an express admission of guilt for the Oakwood Mutiny in 2003 and the Manila Peninsula incident in 2007.

Trillanes said he “absolutely complied” with those requirements.

“We’re just following the law here,” Guevarra said.
