Guevarra orders dismissal of 8 Immigration job order contractors for alleged extortion of Korean nationals

(Eagle News)–Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has ordered the sacking of eight Immigration job order contractors allegedly involved in the extortion of more than P9.2 million from Korean nationals.

Guevarra gave the order for the termination of their contracts to  the Bureau of Immigration, after he found “factual and legal bases” for such “upon a review of the terms of engagement of the job order contractors and the evidence adduced against them,” Justice Undersecretary and spokesperson Markk Perete said.

Earlier, Guevarra placed under a 90-day preventive suspension the ten  BI officers and employees who were part of the team that apprehended the 15 Korean nationals.

“The ten BI officers and employees are now subject to proceedings to determine their administrative liability for grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service,” Perete said.

The 15 Korean nationals alleged that on 6 March 2019, the BI officers and employees apprehended them in Korean Town, Angeles City, Pampanga, and were brought to the BI Main Office “where they were forced to shell out various sums of money under threat of detention.”
