(Eagle News)–Eighty-eight Communist rebels who have surrendered were treated to an all-expenses paid trip to Hong Kong by the government.

The trip, which took place from July 30 to Aug. 2, was facilitated by the Eastern Mindanao Command and the Presidential Management Staff.

“The tour contributes in the continuing therapy and integration process for these beneficiaries as they slowly adapt to the normal life,” Lt. Gen. Felimon Santos Jr., commander of Eastmincom, said in a statement.

The former rebels visited historic Hong Kong spots and market areas, the Eastmincom said.

In February last year, President Rodrigo Duterte  vowed to send the rebels who visited him in Malacañang to a trip.

Only recently, the Palace urged rebels, together with the left, to surrender, and admit theirs is a “failed rebellion.”

“It is time for them to join the rest of their surrenderers who have been coming out in droves as they respond to the call of the President to return to the democratic society and embrace constitutional order,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.
