(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra and Bureau of Corrections Chief Nicanor Faeldon not to release former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez.
This is according to the President’s longtime aide and now-Senator Bong Go in an interview over GMA-7 on Monday, Aug. 26.
Go said the President was angry following reports Sanchez could be released, after the Supreme Court ruled in June that RA 10592, which increases the Good Conduct Time Allowance given to inmates, should apply retroactively.
This means inmates who were given a final judgment prior to the law’s enactment in 2013 could benefit from the measure.
Sanchez was convicted of the killing and rape of Aileen Sarmenta, and the murder of her friend Allan Gomez in the 1990s.
Duterte, a lawyer, believes those convicted of heinous crimes were excluded from coverage of RA 10592, which increases the Good Conduct Time Allowance given to inmates, Go said.
Earlier, the Palace said also excluded from coverage of the law were recidivists, habitual delinquents and escapees.
