CEBU CITY, July 16 (PNA) — Typhoon “Glenda” brought rains to Cebu but spared the province’s northern part which was battered by super typhoon “Yolanda” last Nov. 8, officials said.

Wilson Ramos, Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) executive officer, said there were no reports of casualties in northern Cebu.

Ramos attributed this to the early preparations made by the local government units and the timely suspension of classes.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III announced the suspension of classes in the province at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama also ordered the suspension of classes starting at noon Tuesday.

There were no classes in public schools Wednesday in Cebu but classes will resume Friday.

The Philippine Coast Guard also suspended the trips of passenger vessels since Monday night from Cebu to other areas, affecting some 700 passengers.

Cebu Coast Guard Commander Rodulfo Villajuan said they suspended the trips to Ormoc, Maasin, Leyte, Tagbilaran, Samar, Cadiz City, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Bantayan Island and Masbate since Monday night.

Some 18 fast crafts, motor bancas and cargo vessels cancelled their trips.

But the suspension was lifted Wednesday.

“For me it should not be termed as stranded, maybe affected lang yung passengers. They went home and they do understand the situation,” Villajuan said.

But he advised barangay captains in coastal areas to check their fishermen and motor banca operators because the seas are still rough.

“I hope the barangay officials will be the ones to check and they may also declare the cancellation of trips in their areas. This is for everyone’s safety,” Villajuan said.
