(Eagle News)–Former jail warden Gerald Bantag on Friday, Sept. 20, took his oath as the new Bureau of Corrections director-general.

Bantag took his oath before Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, days after he was appointed to the post by President Rodrigo Duterte.

His appointment came after Duterte sacked Nicanor Faeldon as BuCor director-general following the release of convicts of heinous crimes under the Good Conduct Time Allowance law.

The Palace has said Bantag, a former Parañaque and Manila jail warden, was chosen based on his professionalism and competence.

Duterte had sacked Faeldon following reports the release of some convicts under the law was made possible after payment of inmates to unscrupulous BuCor personnel.

Guevarra has ordered Bantag to clean up the GCTA mess, implement computerization and stop the illegal drug trade in prison, in order of priority.
