Final say on death penalty revival still with Congress, says Malacañang

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that the final say regarding the revival of the death penalty remains with the Congress.

Abella said that although the revival of the death penalty is one of the campaign promises of President Rodrigo Duterte, Malacañang concedes that the power remains with the Congress.

This is despite previous pronouncements from President Duterte pushing for the revival of the death penalty.

In a statement, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said that the President respects the independence of Congress as a separate co-equal branch of government.”

“He trusts the wisdom of our lawmakers to see that the enactment of such law would benefit the nation not only by instilling respect for the law among our people but also by ending impunity and ensuring that those who commit heinous crimes are prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Andanar added.
