(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte offered his “warm congratulations” to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, saying his administration is looking forward to working with him to enhance US-Philippine relations.

In a statement relayed through his Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, Duterte said he wished US President-elect Trump “success in the next four years as Chief Executive and commander-in-chief of the US military.”

President Duterte then said he was looking forward “working with the incoming administration for enhanced Philippines-US relations anchored on mutual respect, mutual benefit and shared commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.”

The Malacanang statement also described the just concluded US presidential elections as a “testament to the enduring traditions of its democratic system and the American way of life.”

“The two party system gives American voters freedom of choice based on party platforms, not just personalities,” the statement read.

Previously, Duterte had been very vocal against the United States, particularly against US President Barack Obama and the former US Ambassador to the Philippines, Philip Goldberg.

He had even threatened to end the Philippines’ alliance with the US, as he insisted on charting an independent foreign policy that would not follow US dictates.

Duterte will be visiting Thailand and Malaysia for an official visit, with the latter as part of his introductory visit to ASEAN countries.   He will also be paying his respects to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadeh of Thailand when he visits Bangkok, Thailand on Wednesday, November 9.
