Duterte believes fears China could shut down PHL power lines unfounded

(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte has dismissed fears China could shut down the country’s power lines.

“Of course not. You help us…Kasi ang China tumulong lang, nag-magandang loob, kasi gusto rin niya yung may kakampi sila kasi puro kakampi ng Amerikano eh. So they’re trying to help everybody na makinig sa kanila,” Duterte said in an interview over CNN Philippines.

According to Duterte, the setup with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines was also beneficial for both countries, which would make the speculations unfounded.

“Sabihin ko sa China, ‘Look China, we’re friends. We’re doing business. You want money, we want money. It produces money for both of us,” he said.

It was lawmakers who raised concerns the Asian giant could shut down the country’s power lines in the event of a conflict, what with China’s 40 percent stake in the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.

But the Chinese Foreign Ministry has already dismissed the speculations as  baseless, noting that his country’s  State Grid Corp. was only a cooperation partner in the National Transmission Commission project.
