Duterte appoints new Coast Guard commandant

(Eagle News)–The Philippine Coast Guard will have a new commandant.

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Deputy Commandant for Administration Vice Admiral Joel Sarsiban Garcia to the post, which will be left vacant by Admiral Elson Hermogino, who is leaving the service.

Garcia, who will assume office on Oct. 24, will be the  28th commandant of the Coast Guard.

Garcia, a licensed master mariner, is also the  Executive Director of the National Coast Watch Center under the Office of the President.

He studied at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy.

He also has a  masters of science degree in maritime safety administration from the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden and a masters in shipping management from the Philippine Merchant Academy.

He also has a doctorate degree in philosophy and public administration from the Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology and a doctorate degree in humanities at the Sulu State College. Vic Somintac
