Drilon wants inquiry into reported eligibility for early release of Antonio Sanchez

Aims for “remedial legislation” to RA 10592

(Eagle News)–Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon is seeking an inquiry into the reported eligibility of former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez for an early release from prison.

In filing Resolution No. 106, Drilon noted the pronouncement by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra Sanchez and over 10,000 other inmates may be released soon after the Supreme Court ruled in June that RA 10592, which increases the  Good Conduct Time Allowance given to inmates, should be applied retroactively.

This means convicts who were given the final judgment prior to the enactment of the law in 2013,  during the time of then-President Noynoy Aquino, could benefit from the law.

Then-Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and then-Interior Secretary had recommended that the law be applied prospectively.

Drilon also noted a supposed pronouncement by Bureau of Corrections spokesperson Sonny del Rosario that Sanchez had “already served 49 years based on the computation of his good conduct time allowance.”

He said the aim of the inquiry was to ensure the proper implementation of the law, and the “enactment of remedial legislation” to RA 10592.

He directed the committee on justice and human rights to conduct the inquiry.

Sanchez was convicted of the murder and rape of Aileen Sarmenta, and the murder of her friend Allan Gomez in the 1990s.
