(Eagle News)–The Department of Transportation will hold an inaugural run of the Philippine National Railways new railcars from Indonesia today.

The DOTr said  the six railcars purchased from PT Industri Kereta Api will form part of the 37 railcars and three locomotives earlier purchased from the same company.

The new coaches will ply the PNR’s FTI-Tutuban and FTI-Malabon routes.

They will add 18 to 20 trips per day.

“The inaugural run this morning is historically significant, as it will showcase these modern DMU train sets under a re-fleeting program which was made possible using PNR’s own budget appropriation, with assistance from the (DOTr), and not acquired through loans or donations by a foreign government..,” the DOTr said.

It noted that this was a first in 40 years.

“This is an important milestone as it signifies the serious effort of the Duterte administration to revitalize what used to be the premiere mass transportation mode of the country,” the agency added.
