(Eagle News) — The country’s first subway is expected to be  partially operational in 2022.

The Department of Transportation made the announcement in a Facebook post on Thursday, Feb. 21.

The DOTr said during that time, the first three stations of the Metro Manila Subway–Quirino Highway, Tandang Sora and North Ave.—will be operational.

The remaining 13 stations of the subway system that is expected to link Mindanao Ave. in Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in southern Metro Manila will have been operational by 2025, the DOTr said.

According to the DOTr, at 80 kilometers per hour, the P356.96-billion subway is expected to cut short travel time from North Ave. in Quezon City to NAIA and FTI to 31 minutes.

Earlier, the DOTr said the ground-breaking ceremony for the project under the government’s Build, Build, Build program will be held on Feb. 27.

In March last year, the Philippine and Japanese governments signed a loan agreement for the project, with the first tranche amounting to P51.37 billion.
