DOJ says 1665 convicts released under GCTA law have surrendered so far; deadline looms

(Eagle News)–Over 1600 convicts released under the Good Conduct Time Allowance law have so far surrendered to authorities, the Department of Justice said.

Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete said the 1665 who are now in Bureau of Corrections custody is as of 8 p.m. today, over three hours before  the deadline for their surrender.

It was President Rodrigo Duterte who gave the convicts released under the GCTA law 15 days to turn themselves in or be treated as fugitives.

Perete said after 11:59 p.m. today, warrantless arrests of convicts who did not surrender will ensue.

The President issued the directive following reports corruption was involved in the release of some convicts under the law, which reduces the sentence of an inmate for good conduct.
