(Eagle News)–None of the prisoners deprived of liberty who were “prematurely released” under the Good Conduct Time Allowance law has left the country.
This is according to a preliminary report from the Bureau of Immigration, Justice spokesperson Markk Perete said, who announced the Department of Justice Interim Oversight Committee would meet today with Bureau of Corrections officials to “discuss coordinating mechanisms, and conduct inspections, among others.”
According to Perete, as of 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, 28 surrenderees who are “prematurely released PDLs on account of GCTA” arrived at the BuCor accompanied by PNP Region II officers.
He said as of 12 midnight, a total of 76 surrenderees are in BuCor custody.
“BuCor continues to receive reports from PNP Regional Offices of more surrenderees,” he said.
Earlier, the Philippine National Police said at least 65 convicts of heinous crimes have surrendered after President Rodrigo Duterte’s 15-day ultimatum.
The President urged convicts released under the GCTA law to surrender in 15 days or be treated as fugitives, following reports of corruption in the BuCor involving the grant of such allowances to inmates.
The Senate is probing the GCTA controversy.
