DOJ gathering info on online message board 8chan

(Eagle News)–The Department of Justice is gathering information on an online message board that is linked to mass shootings abroad and which is allegedly being run from the Philippines.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said this was before the DOJ would decide whether looking into 8chan–where the gunman in the El Paso, Texas shootings was supposed to have made a post in reference to the killings—was something the National Bureau of Investigation should do.

8chan was also supposed to have been used as a platform for expression  by a shooter who killed 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand in March.

Frederick Brennan, founder of 8chan, and 8chan current owner, Jim Watkins, are reportedly based in the Philippines.

Brennan has called for the shutdown of the site, likening it to Frankenstein’s monster.

“If I could go back and not create 8chan at all, I probably would,” he told Reuters.

The Philippine National Police is investigating 8chan, while the Bureau of Immigration said it was “interested in verifying the records of these foreign nationals allegedly working in the Philippines.” With reports from Moira Encina
