DOH reports 8,562 more COVID-19 cases

(Eagle News) — COVID-19 cases in the Philippines jumped to 1,580,824 after the Department of Health reported 8,562 more COVID-19 cases on Friday, July 30, the highest since May.

According to the DOH data, 61,920 cases were active.

Of these, 94 percent were mild, 1.2 percent asymptomatic, 1.2 percent critical, 2.1 percent were severe, and 1.49 percent were moderate.

Recoveries rose to 1,491,182 including the additional 2,854 recoveries.

Over 100, or 145, more deaths were also reported, pushing the death toll to 27,722.

The DOH had warned of a possible surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant, projecting an increase to 11,000 daily COVID-19 cases by the end of September.

The DOH has said the variant could be up to 60 percent more transmissible than the Alpha variant first detected in the United Kingdom.

While an Alpha variant-positive person can infect three to four people, a Delta variant-positive person can infect eight.

On Friday, the Palace announced Metro Manila would revert to an enhanced community quarantine from Aug. 6 to 20.
