DOH confirms second case of polio in 19 years

(Eagle News)–The Department of Health has confirmed a second case of polio in the country in 19 years.

In a press release, the DOH said the case this time involves a  five-year-old boy from Laguna.

The DOH said the boy, who experienced the onset of paralysis on Aug. 25, tested positive  for the polio virus after samples were sent to the Japan National Institute for Infectious Diseases.

Although the boy has been discharged from the hospital and can now walk, the DOH said he is closely being monitored for residual symptoms.

“We continue to urge parents and caregivers of children below five years old, health workers, and local chief executives to take part in the synchronized polio vaccination to be scheduled in their communities,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a statement.

He also urged the public ” to practice good personal hygiene, wash their hands regularly, to use toilets, drink safe water, and to cook food thoroughly.”

Earlier, the DOH said polio was “re-emerging” in the country after the first case of polio in 19 years was confirmed in Lanao del Sur.

The DOH said the first case involved a three-year-old girl. With a report from Madz Moratillo
