DILG warns policemen vs accepting gifts, bribes

(Eagle News)–The Department of the Interior and Local Government on Tuesday, Aug. 13, warned policemen they could be held liable if they receive gifts of monetary value while on duty.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said they may be held both criminally and administratively liable under the law.

He said this was also a violation of the police’s oath.

“Although an exception is provided for in the law, may we remind our fellow workers in government, especially those in the Philippine National Police (PNP), that your services are already fully paid by the people through their taxes,” Año said.

Año issued the statement after President Rodrigo Duterte said in a speech that policemen could receive gifts, but not bribes.

The Palace later said the President was referring to gifts of little value, as provided for by the law.
