DILG hails former Senate President Nene Pimentel as one of PHL’s “greatest political figures”

(Eagle News)–The Department of the Interior and Local Government mourned the passing of former Senate President Nene Pimentel, whom it called “one of the country’s greatest political figures.”

In a statement, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año noted the contributions of Pimentel, who it said was also “former Minister/Secretary of Local Government under the Cory Aquino administration.”

Año noted Pimentel was the principal author of the Republic Act 7160 or The Local Government Code of 1991 that gives local government units the power to provide for the basic needs of the people within their areas.

“Even if he is no longer with us, this Department will continue his advocacy for change and political reform through our program for constitutional reform (CORE),” he added.

Pimentel was 85 years old when he passed away on Sunday, Oct. 20.

He had been fighting cancer and pneumonia.
