DFA verifying reports 13 Filipino seamen kidnapped off coast of Cameroon

(Eagle News)–The Department of Foreign Affairs is verifying reports 13 Filipino seamen were kidnapped off the coast of Cameroon.

In a statement, the DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, which has jurisdiction over Cameroon, is checking the report and has been instructed to make representations with the authorities.

It said the department was also in close contact with the seamen’s manning agency and their next-of-kin.

Earlier reports said the seafarers were seized from two ships while they were anchored off the Port of Douala in the Gulf of Guinea.

Non-governmental watchdog International Maritime Bureau  has confirmed the abduction of a total of 17 seamen.
