DFA: No Filipino reported affected by Chile protests

(Eagle News)–No Filipino has been reported affected by the ongoing protests in Chile, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

The DFA made the statement as it urged the 800 Overseas Filipino Workers there to exercise the necessary precautions in view of the declaration of a State of Emergency in Grand Santiago on October 19 due to the protests.

The state of emergency, which would supposedly last for 15 days,  has since been extended to Chucabuco, Puente Alto, San Bernardo, Concepcion, Valparaiso, Iquique, Maipu, and other provinces.

“Amidst the ongoing violent protests, Filipinos are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel to affected areas, specifically in central Santiago and areas around submetro and bus stations,” the DFA said.

It said it would, through the Philippine embassy, continue to monitor the situation.

Filipinos needing assistance may contact the embassy hotline number at +56-94-272-0320.

The protests in the country were triggered by a rise in metro prices, but protesters have now also denounced the government’s austerity.

Chile President Sebastián Piñera has announced reforms aimed at ending the protests, which have left at least 15 dead.
