Canadian gov’t: Removal of trash shipped to PHL will have been completed by the end of June

(Eagle News)– The removal of the trash shipped by Canada to the Philippines six years ago will have been completed by the end of June, the Canadian government said.

In a statement, the North American country said this was as  “the waste must be safely treated to meet Canadian safety and health requirements.”

It said Catherine McKenna, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has awarded a contract to Bollore Logistics Canada.

It said the cost of the shipment would be shouldered by the Canadian government.

“The company will begin preparation for the shipping in the coming days,” the Canadian government said.

The North American country issued the statement after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered government agencies to look for a private vessel that would ship the trash back to Canada.

The Palace had said the Philippine government would shoulder the cost  of the shipment.

Should Canada refuse to accept the garbage, the Palace said it would be left in Canadian waters.
