BI announces more stringent rules on foreigners seeking permits to work in PHL

(Eagle News) — The Bureau of Immigration on Wednesday, Feb. 6, said it was imposing more stringent requirements on foreigners seeking permits to work in the Philippines.

According to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, applicants will have to submit additional requirements before they can be issued permits.

He said work permits to foreigners who wish to work as cashiers, janitors, carpenters, and who wish to hold other blue-collar jobs will  no longer be issued, and if someone wishes to work as a professional in a field regulated by the Professional Regulation Commission, Morente said the approval of the Commission is required.

“This is to ensure that these work permits are issued only to aliens whose jobs could not be performed by Filipinos,” Morente said.

Earlier, Senator Joel Villanueva lamented what he said was the increasing number of foreigners taking away jobs that could be given to Filipinos instead.

For this, he urged the BI and the Department of Labor and Employment to coordinate in the issuance of work permits to foreigners, among others.
