Andaya: House to heed Duterte’s call for Road Board to be abolished

(Eagle News)—–House Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr. on Saturday, Dec. 22, said the House of Representatives would heed President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for the Road Board to be abolished.

In a radio interview, Andaya said there should be “real abolition” of the board, which determines where the motor vehicle users’ charge goes.

The MVUC is paid by motorists upon registration of their vehicles.

According to Andaya, the proceeds “need to be included as a line-item fund in the annual budget” of the Department of Public Works and Highways in the General Appropriations Act.

He said in this manner, “the real and full funding level of the DPWH is reflected clearly, unlike today when MVUC  spending is segregated and treated as a non-national budget expenditure.”

“We also prefer that non-road user activities like garbage collection be stricken off the spending menu,” Andaya said.

Earlier, there was a debate about what the President wanted for the Road Board due to corruption allegations, with the Palace saying he wanted it abolished, and Andaya saying he only wanted it restructured.

On Friday, Dec.21, Duterte put an end to the debate when he categorically said he wanted the abolition, noting that the board was only used by politicians to make money.
