Alert level 4 hoisted over Taal volcano; PHIVOLCS says explosive hazardous eruption possible within hours or days

(Eagle News)-The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has hoisted an Alert Level 4 over Taal volcano.

In an advisory, PHIVOLCS said this means that an explosive hazardous eruption is possible within hours or days.

It “strongly” recommended an evacuation of the volcano island and additional areas within a 14-kilometer radius from Taal main crater, which are at high risk to pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami.

It said areas north of Taal volcano are advised to guard against the effects of heavy and prolonged ashfall.

PHIVOLCS raised the alert after the volcano generated a 10 to 15-kilometer steam-laden column that generated ashfall that reached as far as Quezon City.

Volcanic tremor and earthquakes in Tagaytay and Alitahtag, Batangas were also recorded.
