Aguirre denies clearing Sombero in immigration bribery scandal

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News ) — Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre denied that he had cleared Wally Sombero in the P50-million controversy involving two former immigration officials.

In denying Sombero’s earlier claim the justice secretary himself had told him he had been cleared in the controversy, Aguirre said that the National Prosecution Services was still conducting its investigation.

The Department of Justice chief said he has yet to receive the results of the inquiry.

Sombero is the alleged middleman of Chinese tycoon Jack Lam.

He was accused of giving Php 50 million to two then-immigration deputy commissioners in exchange for the release from detention of several Chinese nationals employed by Lam.

The Chinese nationals had earlier been arrested and detained as they had been illegally staying in the country.
