
(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday, Nov. 30, formally declared the 30th Southeast Asian Games open, before thousands of spectators at the Philippine Arena.
“I declare open the SEA Games for the 30th time celebrating the games of Southeast Asia. Mabuhay kayong lahat,” President Duterte, who was wearing a barong Tagalog, said.
Prior to this, spectators were treated to colorful performances that showcased Filipino culture, including the native dance singkil and other native sports such as eskrima.
Singer Lani Misalucha also gave a powerful rendition of the country’s national anthem, Lupang Hinirang.
In his speech, Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee chair Alan Peter Cayetano emphasized the sacrifices of the athlete, and how he or she should take center stage in the biennial sporting event.
