“Quiel” intensifies into tropical storm

(Eagle News) — “Quiel” has intensified into a tropical storm as it moved over the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

In its latest advisory, PAGASA said the weather disturbance was last spotted 500 kilometers west southwest of Subic, Zambales.

It is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

“Quiel,” which is moving eastward at 10 kph, is indirectly affecting Zambales and Bataan, which were placed under a yellow heavy rainfall warning on Tuesday night.

PAGASA said moderate to occasionally heavy rains are expected over Baggao, Lallo, Sanchez Mira in Cagayan, and in Calanyugan, Claveria, Pamplona, Santa Ana, Santa Praxedes in Aparri.

The same conditions are expected in Flora Luna, Pudtol and Santa Marcela in Apayao.

According to PAGASA, apart from “Quiel” the tail-end of a cold front is affecting Northern Luzon.

It said it was also monitoring Typhoon “Halong,” which is located 3020 east of extreme Northern Luzon, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
