SWS: Total hunger down to 9.1 percent in September

(Eagle News)–Total hunger in the country subsided to 9.1 percent in September, a recent Social Weather Stations found.

According to the Third Quarter 2019 Social Weather Survey  conductedfrom September 27-30, the 9.1 percent was a recovery from the 10.0% hunger rate recorded in June 2019, following an increase from the 9.5 percent in March.

The pollster also found that compared to June 2019 figures, moderate hunger went down from 8.7 percent.

Moderate hunger refers to those who experienced hunger only once or  few times in the last three months.

Severe hunger however went up from 1.3 percent.

Severe hunger refers to those who experienced it often or always in the last three months.

The SWS said the decrease in the national hunger rate is due to a decrease of 7.4 points in Metro Manila, a decrease of 1.2 points in Balance Luzon, a steady figure in the Visayas, and an increase of 2.9 points in Mindanao.

The survey made use of face-to-face interviews of 1,800 adults (18 years old and above) nationwide: 600 each in Balance Luzon and Mindanao, and 300 each in Metro Manila and the Visayas.

Sampling error margins were pegged at  ±2.3% for national percentages, ±4% each for Balance Luzon and Mindanao, and ±6% each for Metro Manila and the Visayas.
