Signal No. 1 hoisted over Batanes, Babuyan islands as “Onyok” slightly intensifies

(Eagle News)–Signal No. 1 has been hoisted over Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands as Tropical Storm “Onyok” slightly intensified.

As of 4 p.m., the center of the tropical storm was estimated  at 890 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained  winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

It is moving northwest at 35 kilometers.

PAGASA said between today and tomorrow,  the trough of “Onyok” will bring scattered light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms over Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas.

“Onyok” is less likely to make landfall in the country throughout the forecast period, PAGASA said, but  may intensify into a Severe Tropical Storm within 24 hours.

The weather bureau said sea travel is risky, especially for small seacraft, over the seaboards under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1 due to “potentially rough sea conditions.”
