Syrian court finds employer of slain OFW Joanna Demafelis guilty of murder

(Eagle News)–The employer of slain Overseas Filipino Worker Joanna Demafelis has been found guilty of her murder.

The Department of Foreign Affairs Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers said Syrian national Mouna Ali Hassoun was convicted by the Syrian District Criminal Court.

Hassoun’s Lebanese husband, Nader Essam Assaf, has also been charged with murder in Lebanon, the DFA said.

“DFA will continue to provide legal assistance to the family until justice is served,” it added.

Demafelis’ body was found frozen inside her employer’s house in Kuwait in February 2018.

The incident angered President Rodrigo Duterte, who ordered a total ban on the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait as a result.

Duterte lifted the ban after the Philippines and Kuwait signed in May 2018 a memorandum of agreement  providing additional protection for OFWs in the Gulf state.
