Senators oblige

(Eagle News)–Nicanor Faeldon has begged off from attending the third hearing into the Good Conduct Time Allowance law, a day after President Rodrigo Duterte sacked him from his post of director-general at the Bureau of Corrections.
Senator Richard Gordon, blue ribbon and justice committee chair, said he received a text on this from Faeldon’s lawyer.
“Tinanong ko ang mga kapwa ko senador. Importante na makarating siya pero ang present attitude namin is medyo magnanimous,” he said, noting that Faeldon would not be subjected to any sanction.
“In the meantime, unless there is an information that requires his presence, we will not pit him under any sanction. He has resigned and we will leave it at that at the moment,” he added.
President Duterte demanded Faeldon’s resignation following the release of convicts of heinous crimes, including the three convicted of the rape-slay of the Chiong sisters, and the near-release of former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez under the GCTA law.
Sanchez was convicted of the killing and rape of Eileen Sarmenta and of the killing of Allan Gomez.
Duterte also gave the 1700 convicts 15 days to surrender or be treated as fugitives if they fail to do so.
