(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte will wait for the results of the congressional probe into the release of convicts under Republic Act 10592 before deciding on the fate of Bureau of Corrections officials.
This is according to Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo, who issued a statement a day after the Senate began its inquiry.
A second hearing is scheduled for today, Sept. 3.
According to Panelo, Duterte would “maintain the status quo” so far since those behind the release were “probably employees employed during the previous administrations and are therefore protected by the Civil Service Law.”
He said Duterte could therefore “not— and cannot — just remove them without violating their security of tenure.”
The President “will be monitoring the conduct of the legislative investigation and give appropriate consideration to the findings of Congress,” Panelo said.
