House committee on housing reminds NHA it cannot give free housing to Kadamay members

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News)  — The House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Urban Development advised the National Housing Authority (NHA) that it cannot grant free housing units to members of the  group that illegally occupied government housing units in Bulacan.

Committee chair Negros Occidental Representative Alfred Abelardo “Albie” Benitez said NHA cannot accede to the request of the members of Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (KADAMAY) as NHA is not mandated to provide free housing units.

According to Benitez , Kadamay members should still pay if they are allowed to stay there.

The NHA, after all, he said, offers low-cost housing, not free housing.

Benitez also warned the NHA that it may face technical malversation charges if the agency gives the housing units to Kadamay members for free.

The housing project in Pandi town in Bulacan was intended for low-salaried policemen and soldiers, and for urban poor dwellers living in dangerous areas such as  waterways like esteros, rivers, and railways and bridges.
