QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) – The health department said that  27 evacuees have now died in the ongoing Marawi City crisis, with the newest addition being a newborn infant.

With a diet limited to canned sardines and instant noodles, many of the evacuees now have weakened immune systems.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), some of the health problems that evacuees have are skin disease, lung-disease, hypertension and water-borne disease like diarrhea and amoebiasis.

Health Secretary Paulyn Jean Ubial confirmed the 27 deaths recorded as of June 26.

The additional deaths were due to severe dehydration and pneumonia, according to the DOH.

They were among the 76 serious cases referred for hospital admission.

The DOH said the 27 were among the 2,013 Marawi evacuees admitted in hospitals, and that a total of 1,891 of them had already been discharged.
