(Eagle News)– Twenty-four police officers involved in operation which led to the killing of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa have been relieved from their posts.
This was directed by Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Dir. Gen. Ronald dela Rosa. The decision follows the investigation on the mayor’s death early Saturday morning, when officers from Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)-Region 8 came to serve a search warrant to Espinosa at the Baybay City Provincial Jail.
In a statement, Dela Rosa said he has directed PNP Personnel and Record Management Director Fernando Mendez Jr. to immediately issue the order for the relief of the police officers.
The relieved officers will be reassigned to the Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit in the PNP headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City to face ongoing investigations by the Internal Affairs service and the CIDG.
He stressed that the PNP will fully cooperate in any investigations regarding the mayor’s death.
“Let me assure everyone that there will be no whitewash in the investigation; (We will) ferret out the truth and slap appropriate sanctions or charges to our personnel who have committed violations,” he added in his statement.
