Two senators back Sara Duterte as country’s future president

(Eagle News) — Two senators on Tuesday, Feb. 19, backed Davao Mayor Sara Duterte as the country’s president in the future, noting what they said were her good qualities.

In a text message to reporters, Senator Panfilo Lacson said the daughter of incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte remains his “top choice” if “the next leader of our country would emerge from the young, fresh and new faces in national politics.”

“I’ve said this before sometime in August last year and I’ll say it again,” Lacson said.

In that statement, Lacson noted the Davao mayor’s “good leadership qualities” that include her being “strong-willed, stern, vibrant, and progressive-minded.”

Senator Sonny Angara agreed.

“Mayor Sara has the training, experience, savvy and going around the country with HNP (Hugpong ng Pagbabago regional party) will only give her a better perspective on the country’s problems,” Angara said, referring to the party the Davao mayor herself launched, upon the blessing of her father.

The party has fielded 13 senatorial candidates for the May elections.

According to Angara, the Davao mayor also “has probably the best mentor one can have— President Digong training and advising her on national issues.”

“She has the makings of a good president and people are looking for new and young leaders to lead our country and the future,” he said.

Earlier, the presidential daughter said she would decide on whether to run for president by 2021.

Her father’s term is set to expire in 2022.

The President has said he would no longer stay as the country’s chief executive after his term expires, even if this would be allowed in the Philippines’ new Charter. With a report from PNA
