Ejercito: Incident at NAIA “a signal for new airport to be built”

(Eagle News)–The cancellation of several flights as a result of a Xiamen plane getting stuck on a Ninoy Aquino International Airport runway after making a hard landing “is already a signal for a new airport to be built.”

This is according to Senator JV Ejercito, in a statement on Sunday, Aug. 19.

“The single International runway will not really work anymore..At this point the quickest solution for Manila’s airport problems is to have a twin airport system between Clark and NAIA, just like Haneda & Narita in Tokyo,” the senator said.

According to the senator, who was also an affected passenger as a result of the incident,  two administrations have gone by and yet the location of a new airport has not yet been decided.

He also said there was a need to focus on the construction of several projects, such as the Philippine National Railway north rail line project of the government bound for Clark, Pampanga, and the P12-billion terminal building.

On Thursday, a Xiamen plane overshot the 06/24 NAIA runway, prompting authorities to close down the same to flights until the plane was extracted and clearing operations were completed.

The runway as reopened on Saturday, 36 hours after the incident.
