Arroyo moves to lower age of criminal liability

(Eagle News)—-House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will move for the passage of a bill that will lower the age of criminal liability.

Arroyo’s statement said House Justice Committee chair Salvador  Leachon will hold a committee hearing on pending bills that seek the same on January 21 at 10 a.m.

These include House Bill No. 505 filed by Tarlac Representative Victor Yap, which aims to lower the age of criminal liability to nine years old, and House Bill No. 2009 filed by Antipolo Representative Romeo Acop.

President Rodrigo Duterte has been vocal about the need to lower the age of criminal liability to prevent crime among children at such a young age.

At present, the Juvenile Justice Welfare Act pegs the age of criminal liability to 15 years old.
