5.7 magnitude quake hits Antique
MANILA, Philippines (ENS) — A 5.7 magnitude quake hit Antique at 4:05 Friday afternoon, Oct. 3, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. PHIVOLCS will not lower alert level
Despite fewer incidents of rockfall and volcanic quakes, the PHIVOLCS said that it will not lower Mayon Volcano’s alert level. The sulfur dioxide emissions of the said volcano has risen, meaning that there is continuous activity inside the volcano. The volcano has also swollen up, indicating that there is magma movement inside of it. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) continues its close watch of Mayon volcano which is still placed under alert level 3. Mayon Volcano may explode anytime
PHIVOLCS warns that Mayon Volcano may explode anytime. The report came after the absence of rockfall incidents and volcanic earthquakes, which means that the volcano is now gathering pressure, thus raising the possibility of explosion. The lava may flow in the southeast side of the volcano, near the towns of Sto. Domingo, Daraga, Legaspi and Camarig.
Mayon, dangerous
The local government of Albay continues to warn tourists to stay away from Mayon Volcano. Albay Governor Joey Salceda reminds everyone, especially tourists to stay away from the volcano and its danger zones. Mayon continues to exhibit abnormal activity while the local government conducts forced evacuation of residents in areas near the volcano. In the past 24 hours, PHIVOLCS recorded more rockfall incidents and volcanic earthquakes.
Increasing abnormalities in Mayon
There is a marked increase on the abnormal activity of Mayon Volcano in the past 24 hours. According to a PHIVOLCS report, a total of 245 rockfall events have been recorded. Authorities have increased their efforts on evacuating residents living near the said volcano.
