PHIVOLCS: Aftershocks may continue following 6.3-magnitude quake in Cotabato

(Eagle News)–Aftershocks following the 6.3-magnitude earthquake in Cotabato on Oct. 16 may continue in the next days, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

According to PHIVOLCS, as a result of these aftershocks that may be felt, the public should be cautious of structures “visibly weakened or with signs of damage.”

“In case of houses and other buildings with visible damage, it is best to contact the Municipal/City Engineering Office for advice,” PHIVOLCS said.

PHIVOLCS said engineers from the local government, other agencies and organizations should inspect buildings to determine their integrity, and recommend appropriate actions to the affected groups.

Affected buildings should not be reoccupied unless certified by the engineers, PHIVOLCS said.

The possibility for an earthquake higher than the magnitude 6.3 to occur from the same source is, however, PHIVOLCS said, low.

It added Cotabato was safe from any destructive tsunami as it was landlocked.
