NDRRMC assures affected residents in Mayon area of “urgent action”

(Eagle News)An official of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council gave the assurance the agency was acting swiftly to help communities affected by the Mayon volcano’s recent activity.

“The National Council provides assistance through the distribution of relief items such as food, non-food items, medicines and other logistics to disaster-stricken communities…we assure the public of our urgent action to augment LGU (local government unit) capacity to provide needed relief assistance,” NDDRMC executive director Ricardo B. Jalad said.

NDRRMC’s latest update shows that a  total of 14,483 families or 55,068 persons from Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Daraga, Tabaco City, Malilipot, Santo Domingo and Legazpi City, Albay remained in 59 evacuation centers while 1,395 families or 6,165 individuals had sought shelter with their relatives.

A total of P27,778,683.00 worth of assistance has been provided for those affected, utilizing pre-positioned resources from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Health and Office of Civil Defense.

Jalad said the DSWD was currently facilitating the transport of the remaining family food packs from the 30,000 requested.

Over 8,000–or 8,300–were already transported on Tuesday.

Jalad said the NDRRMC Operations Center was on red alert status as an Alert Level 4 status remained hoisted over Mayon volcano.

The public is advised to stay vigilant and avoid entering the 9-kilometer extended danger zone, Jalad said.

He said the public should also wear protective masks as a preventive measure.
