Hector Janjalani found guilty of abducting Basilan students, teachers in 2000

(Eagle News) — A Pasig court has found the brother of the late Abu Sayyaf leader Khadaffy Janjalani and another guilty of abducting students and teachers in Basilan in 2000.

Pasig Regional Trial Branch 261 Judge Florian Gregory Abalajon sentenced Hector Janjalani to reclusion perpetua for 18 counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention, while Daud Baru was convicted of all 52 counts.

The two were ordered to pay each victim P180,000 in damages.

Meanwhile, Abdulazan Diamla was acquitted of the same charges.

Earlier, the Pasig court convicted 66 other members of the Abu Sayyaf Group.

Of the number, according to the court, 29 were found guilty of 52 counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention, one was convicted of 44 counts but acquitted of eight counts, and ten were found guilty of 41 counts of serious illegal detention.

Twelve were also convicted of 18 counts, three of 11 counts and 11 of seven counts.

Hector was captured by government security forces in December 2000.

The charges stem from the abduction of teachers and students at the Sinangkapan Elementary School and Tumahubong Elementary School.

The teachers and students were kept in a house in the boundary of Sumisip, Maluso and Isabela towns.
