Fish kill damages Php 5-M worth of tilapia in Taal Lake

(Eagle News) –At least 105 fish cages, out of 1,555 operating in the town of Agoncillo in Batangas were affected by the recent fish kill in Taal Lake, killing some P5 million worth of tilapia.

Agoncillo Mayor Daniel Reyes said the cage operators who were affected by the fish kill came from Barangay Subic Ilaya in Agoncillo Batangas.

The apparent cause of the fish kill is a phenomenon called “sulfur upwelling,” which is attributed to the extreme cold temperature fanned by the northeasterly wind “Amihan” during the period of November until February each year.

Because of the incident, the local government of Batangas will distribute tilapia finger lingers to the affected fish cage owners.
