Clemency on probation

As a human being, trust and forgiveness is very essential for our society to develop and for world peace to triumph.

But if our president will grant executive clemency to inmates from the New Bilibid Prisons in time for the Papal visit here in the Philippines, are you fine with that?

According to the news, President Aquino plans to give executive clemency to some NBP inmates.

De Lima said the deadline for the NBP to submit to her a list of candidates for clemency is next week.  She wants to submit the list to the President not later than Wednesday next week.

Some people are against this matter and some are for it.

In my opinion, giving an executive clemency to the inmates is a good help for them to start a brand new life with their family. I know that they’ve done a lot of immoral things in our society and the time that they spend inside the prison is not enough to pay for their sins. But think about it? They are also people. Some of them are not that really bad persons.

In contrary, giving clemency to inmates might lead to a problem. Because if the President will grant executive clemency, there’s a possibility that the inmate might repeat the crime that he did before. If you’re going to forgive a convicted murderer and let him off the hook, you should still be aware of the killer’s behavior which can affect the rest of his life.

Some people may ask: If a person receives clemency, such as pardon, will his bad record be automatically wiped out? The answer is No. the person who has been convicted of a crime will not be expunged of their criminal history, even if his civil rights has been restored.

Anyway, everyone deserves a second chance. Whatever happens to this plan, I’m hoping that it will help our society and benefit the public.
