President Duterte appoints new CHED commissioner

(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed a new Commission on Higher Education commissioner. Based on papers released by the Palace on Wednesday, June 19, Aldrin Darilag assumes the post left vacant by Prospero De Vera III. De Vera was promoted to CHED chairman in October last year. Darilag will serve as CHED commissioner until July 21, 2020.

Former town mayor shot dead while under hospital arrest in Cebu

(Eagle News) — A former town mayor was shot dead while under hospital arrest in Medellin, Cebu, the police said. Police said several armed men barged inside the Bogo-Medellin Corporation Medical Center in Barangay Luy-a at 11:50 p.m. and shot Ricardo “Ricky” Ramirez, 55, dead. Ramirez, who was arrested in 2017 for illegal possession of firearms, was a detainee at the Medellin District Jail. A probe is still ongoing.

Duterte signs law requiring free Internet, clean restrooms, lactating stations in transport terminals

(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law requiring clean restrooms and free Internet in the country’s transport terminals. Under Republic Act 11311 signed on April 17, terminals are also required to have lactating stations for mothers. The law does not cover deluxe sanitary facilities. 3.6-magnitude quake hits Batangas early Wednesday, June 19

(Eagle News)–A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck Batangas early Wednesday, June 19. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake, of tectonic origin, hit 11 kilometers southwest of Calatagan at 2:29 a.m. The depth of focus was 174 kilometers. No damage to property nor aftershocks were expected.

SWS: Number of families who consider themselves poor at a record-low 38 percent

(Eagle News)–Fewer families consider themselves poor, a recent Social Weather Stations survey showed. The survey, done from March 28 to 31, showed a record-low 38%, or an estimated 9.5 million  families, who believe this to be the case. The figure is 12 points below the 50%, or an estimated 11.6 million families, in December 2018, and 4 points below the previous record-low of 42% in September 2016 and March 2018.
