BFAR warning: shellfish ban in Pangasinan still up because of red tide

DAGUPAN City, Pangasinan — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is banning the harvesting of shellfish in the towns of  Anda and Bolinao in Pangasinan because of the red tide toxin which continues to affect the shellfish in the said areas.

BFAR has likewise reminded residents of Pangasinan to refrain from eating shellfish taken from coastal waters, particularly of Anda and Bolinao.

BFAR has also assigned local government units in the province to check the auxilliary invoices of vendors selling shellfish in the various public markets in the province, to make sure that the shellfish they are selling did not come from areas affected by the red tide toxin.

Last Wednesday, April 8, BFAR confiscated sacks of shellfish  being sold in public markets in Dagupan

According to BFAR, the red tide toxin will continue to affect the coasts of Anda and Bolinao because of the hot temperature in these areas.  (translated from a report by Eagle News correspondent Nora Dominguez)
